With discussions surrounding the abolition of NHS England making headlines, concerns are rising about the future of public health services. While much of the debate focuses on patient care and hospital services, one overlooked, yet critical area is environmental health, particularly the impact of industrial chemical safety on public well-being.
With the NHS facing an uncertain future, these industries must take extra steps to avoid chemical-related emergencies. A weakened or restructured healthcare system could mean longer emergency response times, reduced capacity in hospitals for treating chemical exposure cases, and increased pressure on public healthcare services.
A 2022 report from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) found that around 3,000 pollution incidents occur each year in England, many involving hazardous substances which pose serious health risks. Exposure to harmful chemicals, such as industrial spills, groundwater contamination, or air pollution, has been linked to a rise in respiratory conditions, skin diseases, and cancers.
Without a well-structured NHS to manage potential surges in health issues caused by chemical exposure, prevention becomes more important than ever.
Niplast is urging industries to take steps in enhancing chemical containment strategies, reducing the risk of hazardous spills and contamination.
"A well-maintained chemical storage system isn't just about regulatory compliance, it is about safeguarding communities. With uncertainty around NHS England’s future, we must focus on reducing preventable environmental health hazards that could overwhelm a changing healthcare system."
An expert from Niplast
According to Public Health England, poor air quality contributes to up to 36,000 deaths per year in the UK, with industrial emissions playing a significant role. In 2023, 30% of major UK pollution incidents were linked to chemical spills affecting rivers and drinking water sources. The HSE estimates that over 1.4million workers in the UK suffer from work-related ill health, with chemical exposure being a key factor. Without proper containment measures, these risks will only grow, further straining healthcare services.
Beyond health and safety concerns, the cost of cleaning up PFAS contamination across 10,000 UK sites is estimated at up to £121 billion. Companies failing to comply with HSE and UK Environment Agency standards also face heavy fines as well as reputational damage.
Industries must take responsibility now. Safe chemical storage is not just about compliance, it is a public health imperative.
